Easy GMail HTML (Rich Text) Signature Solution

After months of being frustrated due to the lack of Rich Text (HTML) Signatures in Google Mail I have finally found the perfect solution that doesn’t require installing any browser scripts or hacks.

This solution also allows you to manage multiple signatures for different purposes e.g. Business 1, Business 2, Personal.

The Solution

Creating a signature

  1. Go to the Google Labs feature list from Google Mail (Settings > Labs).
  2. Enable the Canned Responses feature and click Save Changes.
  3. Click Compose Mail to start a new message.
  4. Type your signature as you would like it to appear (with colors, images, tables whatever you like).
  5. Click Canned Responses (found under the Subject field).
  6. Click New canned response… and type the name of the signature e.g. “Personal Signature”.
  7. Discard the message.

Using the signature

  1. Click Compose Mail to start a new message (or reply to an existing one).
  2. Click Canned Responses and then select the name of your signature. It will be inserted in its original form within the message body.

This works perfectly when creating a new message or replying to an existing message, it will insert your signature (”Canned Response”) wherever the cursor is, which by default is at the top of the message reply.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Please don’t comment if it is only to highlight that you are against the use of HTML e-mails/signatures, it is unhelpful and quite frankly a ridiculous discussion. Having some colour and formatting in a business e-mail signature is practically essential to maintain brand identity.
